Theatrics: The REDKP Effect

REDKP

20-July-2022

" Rules and Regulations, engalukku illa, ungalukku irunthal, meerapadum( We have no rules and regulations, if any it will be broken)."

" Vikram was that D-movie of the Kollywood industry, this was the opening dialogue of Agent Amar in the movie. When I heard this dialogue, it summed up his character arc. The next time I am asked about Amar, I would remember this."

"Meerapadum"

" For any feature film, its release date is its D-day. For any Biggie star, the opening day matters, for the producer, it's about recovering the costs to profits, and for the technicians, it's about their paycheck on time."

" In the pre-covid era, if1800 feature films across all the film industries are released in the theatres, barely 200 films would manage to recover their costs from the theatrical run. Most of them would face utter disappointment either critically or commercially. Among these 200 would be 10-15 biggies which would clean sweep in all centres. Recent Biggies Include Pushpa: The Rise, RRR, KGF-Chapter 2 and last but not least Vikram. Among these KGF- Chapter 2 and Vikram turned out to be Industrial hits."

"An Industry hit is a tag given to a movie, which breaks all the benchmark records of that film industry. Also, the film should have not suffered any sorts of losses in any territory. The examples stated will be old but for better understanding, it needs to be done. Lemme state some from Tamil Cinema: Rajinikanth, Kamal Hassan, and Vijaykanth were Industry leaders during the 80's up to the early 2000s ( No I am wrong, only Vijaykanth is out of the race, the other two veterans still gave Industry hits in 2k10 as well, yes I'm talking about Enthiran aka Robot which is considered as a biggie of tamil cinema even today, the other one recently gives Vikram which collected close 500 crores, standing second to 2.0, but 2.0 is ain't considered a hit as it had it's own distribution losses). I have had some understanding of Industry hits since the early 2000s. So let me "

" Ok coming to this Instance, In 1999 Rajinikanth's Padayappa was an Industry hit in Kollywood at that point with a collection of close to 44 crores ( According to sources). It was the benchmark for the next five years, and then came Vijay's Ghilli ( Remake of a Telugu biggie Okkadu) in the year 2004. Woah! It was a summer storm at that point collecting close to 50 crores ( It was a remake but it is considered a cult classic even today, it is still the counter for SUN network during the festive season in the TRP race)."

"What next, the next year lands superstar with Chandramukhi [Remake of Kannada film Apthamitra (2004), which itself was a remake of the Malayalam film Manichitrathazhu (1993), which further got remade as Bhool Bulaiya in 2007]. According to sources, It collected around 70 crores. In 2007 Rajinikanth is back with another sixer sensation called Sivaji: The Boss. It's gross is ain't surprising with 150 odd crores at the BOX Office. This didn't stay long as Rajinikanth's another biggie which can easily be counted as a revolution in INDIAN Cinema. Yes, I am quoting about Enthiran A.K.A. Robot. It ended up collecting 250 plus crores. Just shows that Rajinikanth was and is the box office king of tamil cinema."

" But for the next Industry Hit without any losses, Tamil Cinema had a drought of 12 years. Yes, Bigil has a 300 Crores collection but insider news indicates that it did suffer some distribution losses. Then cut to 2k22 came the Man of experiments after four years to the big screen. Yes, its KH, Aandavar, Ulaganayagan A.K.A. Kamal Hassan with Vikram. An Industry hit after covid was a daunting task. We desperately needed something like KGF-Chapter-2 which was both critical and commercial success."

" I stormed into the theatres for VIKRAM as soon as my last board exam was over and what stressbusting feast it turned out. After watching this movie came my D-DAY ( My entrance exam story, another writeup on cards), which I faced with this dialogue:

" Tha Paathukaalam ( We shall face it)."

"And this 500 crores blockbuster gave me a good opener:

"Aarambikalaamgalaa..."

" The ultimate AIM is to make the viewers understand the concept of Industry hit, so I had to pick Tamil Cinema as I have been tracking Tamil Cinema since 10."

" This feature didn't go as per the initial plan, but it has given birth to a new blogging category. Lots of cinematic stuff to be discussed in the future as well. So, stay tuned."
